Introduction

Located in West Sacramento, adjacent to the capital city of California, Sacramento, The Sagely City of Dharma Realm (CDR) was established in 1992 by the founder of the Dharma Realm Buddhist Association (DRBA), the Venerable Master Hsuan Hua.  CDR has on its campus a comprehensive training program for Buddhist nuns as well as classes for individuals wishing to leave the home-life to become Buddhist nuns.

One of Venerable Master Hua’s lifelong aspirations was to educate the young to become pillars of society and to become model citizens of the community and the world at large, as he believes this is the basis for a stable family, productive society, and a peaceful world. Consequently, he also established on the CDR campus schools for children offering education from kindergarten through 12th grade. These schools are aptly named Instilling Goodness Elementary School and Developing Virtues Secondary School.

Additionally, CDR also offers classes for adults for the benefit of the greater Sacramento community, including but not limited to Meditation and Buddhism.

CDR is conveniently located in the heart of West Sacramento, just a bridge away from the Capitol and covers an area of 14.5 acres. Before the Venerable Master’s establishment of CDR, the location was previously a luxury resort with uniquely styled buildings, all of which have been maintained and improved, and modified to suit the needs of a Buddhist center. One will find a solemn Buddha Hall, spacious Dining Hall, dormitory for nuns and laity, as well as the above mentioned schools.

Even though it is often quite noisy outside the walls of CDR, one finds peace and tranquility within the walls of the campus, a harmonious symphony of nature interspersed with chirping birds and fragrances of blooming flowers. Within the serene environment, one finds peace within oneself, allowing one’s mind to rid of the burdens of the outside world, stepping onto the path of wisdom, light, and purity of the mind.

The Traditions of the City of the Dharma Realm

A unique characteristic of the Sagely City of Dharma Realm is that all monastics take only one meal a day during mid-day and always wear their precept sash. Additionally, the Six Great Guiding Principles provide the basis of one’s behavior and serve as the foundation for one’s cultivation. The goals of one’s cultivation are no fighting, no greed, no seeking, no selfishness, no self-benefiting, and no lying. If we are able to stop in its tracks the mind of fighting, the mind of greed, the mind of seeking, the mind of selfishness, the mind of self-benefiting, and the mind of lying, the bright light of wisdom would manifest itself, breaking the darkness of ignorance, allowing one to see the original pure and bright nature of one’s mind, accomplishing the goal of cultivation.
